What is the Japan Rail Pass?

The Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass) is a single ticket that gives you unlimited train travel.

It is widely regarded as the best and easiest way to travel around Japan by train, saving you money with affordable prices.

The JR Pass is exclusively available to visitors to Japan from overseas and covers journeys across all of Japan train network. It includes the famous Shinkansen bullet trains, airport transfers, and even buses and certain ferries.

You can choose from 3 types of JR Pass: 7, 14 or 21 days. You can also get a Green Pass to upgrade to first class.

Is the JR Pass worth it?

If you’re planning to visit different parts of Japan during yourtrip, the JR Pass is definitely worth it.

The JR Pass lets you make as many journeys by train as you want, including routes between major cities like Tokyo, Kyoto,Osaka, and Hiroshima.

For all these trips you only need 1 Japan Rail Pass ticket, that's right, no visiting the ticket booth or rescheduling during your trip!

Can I buy the Japan Rail Pass in Japan?

No, you cannot purchase the JR Pass in Japan. You must order it online and then collect it from an Exchange Office when you arrive.

How long will it take for my JR Pass to arrive?

The exact time will depend on your location, but you’ll likely receive your order within 48 hours if you live in the US, UK, Canada, or Europe.

If you live in an isolated area of a large country, such as parts of Australia and Brazil, it may take longer. However, it is unlikely to take longer than 96 hours/4 business days.

What is included in the Japan Rail Pass?

The Japan Rail Pass is valid on:

  • Shinkansen high-speed trains
  • JR Express and local trains
  • JR Local buses
  • Airport transfer trains to Tokyo and Osaka international airports

Do the 7 / 14 / 21 days need to be consecutive?

Yes, the selected number of days need to be consecutive. Once activated, the validity period of each pass cannot be changed or extended.

How to make seat reservations on the JR Trains?

You can make a reservation before boarding the train. To do this, you must go to ticketing machines or a JR Ticket Office at the station.
